THE MAKEUP MISCONCEPTION

Women should be able to express themselves in any way, shape or form they please. Society has placed us on a pedestal of enormous expectations burdened with the weight of acceptance inscribed in its constant evaluation of a woman’s beauty.
One platform for debate regarding the female posture and form is the ideological conversations surrounding the word: beauty.
A popular phrase says beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. In other words, there is no one standard of beauty-it changes and shifts and transforms as you look through the lens of different individual opinions. So why do we as women feel the need to validate ourselves according to societal norms when choosing how we define our beauty?
An enormous subject in this line of reasoning with regards to how a woman dresses and chooses to present herself and her opinions in her social bearing is, makeup-that one tool a female uses to enhance her looks and even give her added confidence in her walk and daily discussions on societal forums.
Makeup is a perfect example of how the world pokes into a woman’s private thoughts.
It provides a medium for us to understand how a woman is constantly judged according to the world’s insensitive chatter surrounding her individual cause. Unfortunately these words that have been added to the weapons women constantly shield themselves from, is not only used by the male form; women have chosen to judge one another according to how they look, using makeup as a weapon for abuse.
Let me just say this: whether or not a woman chooses to use this tool to enhance her God given features and hues, is not anyone’s business; its her personal view.
In my daily discussions and conversations and even in various forms of exposure such as the beauty of social media to enlighten and refine our personal thought structure, I have come to see comments and backlash at how women choose to use makeup as a tool.
And don’t misunderstand my words-makeup does not add to a woman’s beauty it merely enhances her natural looks. And how many of us are not guilty of engaging in acts that increase our own personal convictions?
It is a mirror; not the mask society paints as deceiving men for a woman’s gain.
She chooses to explore her natural features because she enjoys dabbling and mixing and adding to her own personal picture-she enjoys this cosmetic composition. Whether or not she engages in this act is no one’s business but her own. So why is one so quick to judge a woman when she wears makeup as opposed to when she does not? There is this misconception that she must wear it for male attention or to hide herself behind the shell of insecurity-to cover her true form.
This makes me laugh so deeply because people fail to understand: makeup is her hobby not her den of uncertainty. It is a cosmetic conversation she enjoys like swimming and dancing-its done for fun!
It’s another side of exploration of the delicate female form; its an adventure through colours and shades and different contours and tones-a way for a woman to express her thoughts through her cosmetic canvas chosen just as her own.
It is a way for her to grasp her inner intuition into an outer display of her habits and true nature.
And not all women take part in this artful dance of shaping silhouettes and pictures-some do not choose to explore this side of adventure but that does not mean they do not have grace, and beauty and confidence-these are all traits imbibed in the female form.
They do not come from makeup-it is merely a mirror where a woman reflects her inner creativity-it is merely a tool a woman uses to display her thought patterns and her natural beauty. It is the same as when women wrestle or race or cycle -none of these make her any more masculine-she is simply expressing her beauty as she chooses-she is only giving her voice various mediums for communicating.
So why do we judge how a woman looks based on pleasing a man’s ideals of beauty? Who told you she wears makeup just to catch his attention or to disguise her true intentions?
Yes, there are stages when a girl transforms into a woman that are dotted with insecurities and inhibitions and fears of failure and gasps of guilt that might drive her to hide behind this makeup tool as a shield. But and there is a but, no one has not passed that pathway of self evaluation and investigation; we all deal with it in different ways with different means of expression-through our clothes, our tastes in music, art and even fashion. So why is a woman judged when she chooses to use this form of beauty as her weapon? When she realizes that she enjoys this form of expression?
Why is she still challenged even when she has left that pathway of self-searching and debating into the hallway that is paved with life’s various experiences on how she chooses to dress her female form? Why does it automatically translate into a decision that she uses this tool to hide her true intentions?
Every single person goes through life’s valleys and hills and even gets stuck along the way in the gutter of guilt, but just because she is female and chooses to express herself with makeup-a gift she encountered along the way of growth, development, and exploration-does not mean she should face judgment for how she has chosen to engage in this colourful conversation-it is another side of expression; not her whole voice-so why do we want to squander all her beauty into one choice?
For some it is not to get a man’s attention-for others it is not to hide insecurities or even evil intentions-it is simply a way for her to express herself-a medium she connects with to enable the world to see who she is-bare faced or not-she still carries beauty-she should not be judged on how she chooses to address it.
Her beauty does not come from that toolbox of colours and hues-it has nothing to do with that cosmetic wonderland she has chosen to use-they merely enable her to share her views-of how she wishes to look; not for men or attention but simply an expression of her inner gifts in her outer carriage and form.

Her beauty is barefaced and bold, covered with colours, highlighted with hues, she remains a woman-an unchanging truth. So do not judge her based on one aspect of her truth, she is much more than a cosmetic calculation of society’s views.

MONTHLY BIBLE STUDY: THE PROMISE

As women we have to realize we carry generations in our care. We protect the promise the LORD has established in our lives through our actions and our daily decisions and also in the way we respond to distractions. As women in waiting, it is important to keep true to the promise the LORD has given to you-to remember the Word He spoke to you as He spoke to Hannah:

1 Samuel 1:20 (NIV):
20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

The importance of this passage is that it was in the course of time and the LORD makes everything beautiful in His perfect time:

Ecclesiastes 3:11New International Version (NIV)
11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

It is not for us to question the plans of the LORD but to trust in Him:

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV):
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.[a]

When you trust in Him, men and women of God, He will make your paths straight. Listen, you cannot make your paths straight; He does when you trust Him with all your heart. This is why it is so important to guard your heart in Christ:

Philippians 4:7 (NIV):
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I have laid this foundation down because I want you to understand that He is faithful to keep His promise; so in the place of waiting on the LORD allow Him to renew your strength. Do not fall into the temptations of the enemy because there will always be Hagar’s around:

Genesis 16:1-2 (NIV):
Hagar and Ishmael
16 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”
Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

Don’t connect with Egypt when you are from Israel.
Abram agreed with Sarai because they still kept in the mindset that was outside the promise of God. Abram did not respond to the promise-Abraham did. If you notice, the name change signifies the shift in identity. Abram and Hagar bore Ishmael but Abraham and Sarah bore Isaac. What is your name?
Have you accepted your inheritance or are you still linking yourself to Hagar because if so, you are not ready for the blessings of the LORD that come to His sons not to slaves.
Notice that Hagar is a slave. So men and women of God, are you still slaves to your flesh? If you are, you will be like Abram or Sarai and miss the promise of God by connecting yourself outside the covenant the LORD has given you.
And we are not slaves, we are sons:

Galatians 4:7 (NIV):
So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Hence if you connect yourself to the slaves, you have stepped outside the promise of God; which is why the LORD said to Abraham the promise was for Isaac not Ishmael:

Genesis 17:18-19 (NIV):
18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”
19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

In other words, His Word does not return to Him void:

Isaiah 55:11 (NIV):
11
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Hence the promise is legitimate but have you responded to it? You respond to it by recognizing your identity-a son and daughter of God.
Listen, you walk in your identity as a child of God when you are led by His Spirit:

Romans 8:14 (NIV):
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

So in the place of waiting for a spouse, or whatever else the LORD has promised you, stay in the promise; do not be distracted by Hagar’s around you-they are not of the promise and you know it. This is why it is key to allow the Spirit to lead you.
Like Hannah, the promise will manifest in time, and it will be to the glory of the LORD.
The danger of stepping outside the covenant and promise we have in God is we leave ourselves exposed to the attacks of the enemy. And it is so subtle because the more we walk apart from the Spirit the less we are aware of His presence:

Judges 16:20 (NIV):
20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

And the thing is, you cannot walk in your identity without the presence of the Spirit. You cannot practice waiting on the LORD without His Spirit-so practice relationship in the LORD through Christ and build yourself in the place of meditation and prayer:

Joshua 1:8 (NIV):
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

That way you will be able to test and approve what the will of God is because you have accepted your identity. And hence you know when it is not of God:

John 10:5 (NIV):
But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.”

Because you know His voice:

John 10:27 (NIV):

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

THE LODGING PLACE

All translations of the Word are from the New International Version.

Exodus 4:24-26:

24 At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses and was about to kill him. 25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it. “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,” she said. 26 So the Lord let him alone. (At that time she said “bridegroom of blood,” referring to circumcision.)

I find this text strange for so many reasons. Primarily because  this was Moses on his way to complete his assignment-the assignment he had received from God. And this is what happens to a lot of people-they are on their way to complete their assignment and death meets them on the way. And we wonder why. It is not because they are not called, and it is not because they are not chosen. The LORD says:

Romans 9:15-16:

15 For he says to Moses,
“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[a]
16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

This passage is important because it tells us that the LORD alone determines where His mercy and His compassion will rest.
A lot of people like Moses, have been called to death on their way to purpose. And it does not depend on the desires of humans or on their efforts that the LORD prevents death but because of His mercy and His grace:

Ephesians 2:8:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—

And this grace we have received enables us to live in salvation through faith. For without faith we cannot say we have pleased God, because in denying faith we have denied Him:

Hebrews 10:38:

38 And,
“But my righteous one will live by faith.
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”

Though Moses had followed the instruction, he received from God, he struggled with faith. He struggled to accept the message He had been given and hence displeased God:

Exodus 4:13-14:

13 But Moses said, “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.”
14 Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.

The LORD knows each of our thoughts and our actions-this is why He already sent Aaron to meet Moses. We have to realize the LORD can do anything without us; He simply chooses to work His will through us. This is why we are instruments of righteousness:

Romans 6:13:

13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.

When we offer ourselves to the LORD as instruments, we submit to His will-and this is when we can walk in our purpose contained in the call He has for each of us:

Romans 8:28:

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.

The danger of this is, when one does not walk in accordance with the calling, they walk away from the purpose of God and received only from God. And hence, there is the danger of death-because this is now the path walked apart from God.
Though Moses was walking towards His purpose, which is evidenced by the fact that he had the staff of God in his hand, meaning the gift he had received from God, the LORD met him at a lodging place.
A lodging place is a place of shelter. This is important-because there is nowhere you can hide from the LORD. He is omnipresent and He will find you. It is important to stay in the path He has set before you. Have you rested at a lodging place on the way? Have you decided to seek comfort where He has not sent you? What is your lodging place? What is that place that feels safe, but you know it was not meant to be a stop but rather a passage. The second you decide to rest in a lodging place, it is important to realize that moment, you have broken the covenant you have made with the LORD.
It is important to realize the staff He has given you depends on His presence in your life; the lodging place for Samson was Delilah and the Spirit left him:

Judges 16:20:

20 Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

Moses was not sent to the lodging place; he was sent to Pharaoh:

Exodus 4:2:

21 The Lord said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go.

Don’t stop at the lodging place, and there will be one or more on the way. Go to the Pharaoh the LORD has given you the staff to fight to show people His purpose working in your life.
The moment you stop at the lodging place, you have broken the covenant you made with the LORD in working in His purpose. And this is clear from the Word- He works for the good of those called according to His purpose.
Hence the minute you step out of purpose is the second you step out of covenant with the LORD. And our covenant with the LORD is in Christ-an irrevocable one. We either accept it, or reject it in our actions because our faith needs to be reflected in our deeds or we have killed the covenant we have made with the LORD in our lives by starving His righteousness and righteousness is Christ-and the righteous live by faith.
Hence when we fail to live in faith by following with steps taken in obedience we have failed to act out the righteousness we have received from Christ and hence have stepped outside this beautiful covenant we have received from the LORD.

Romans 1:17:

17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Those that have received the calling and chosen to walk apart from it have met death at the lodging place. They would not have met death otherwise. The call the LORD has on your life carries power-this is why the LORD said He had given Moses the power to perform in front of Pharaoh. And Pharaoh was the enemy. Hence the Pharaoh in your life cannot stand against the power the LORD has given you to perform which we receive from Him through His Spirit and because of the covenant we have made in Christ.
Once you stop in that lodging place-because it looks safe, seen and is a shelter, you will be putting your purpose in danger of being met with death.
If Moses did not stop at the lodging place, the LORD would not have met him to kill him. A meeting is explained as an organized event. This is important. There is nothing that takes place under the sun that is not under divine appointment. Our choices determine the spiritual schedule we have to meet.
In the lodging place, there was an appointment for death. What is your lodging place? Don’t go there-it carries an appointment for death-not only the potential of physical death, but certainly death to purpose, passion and ambition-so choose wisely.
And it is our choice because as the Word says:

Hebrews 10:38:

38 And,
“But my righteousone will live by faith.
    And I take no pleasure
in the one who shrinks back.”

Hence we are the ones who shrink back. He never does.
But this spiritual appointment was averted by blood-the blood of circumcision that touched Moses’ feet.
To touch means to come in contact.
We have come into contact with the blood of Christ-the blood that has circumcised us apart from the death and penalty of sin:

Colossians 2:11:

11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ,

It is this circumcision that has touched us and enabled us to come in contact with Him.
Circumcision is defined as spiritual purification. Moses needed this purification because he had defied the orders of the LORD.
A lodging place may be seen as just that-a lodging place-a place to rest and relax. But there is a work you have been called to do:

Acts 13:2:

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

And our rest is in Christ:

Matthew 11:28:

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

There is a need for spiritual purification because of sin. Sin causes us to dwell apart from spiritual purification-in other words, it keeps us apart from holiness. But in Christ, we have received spiritual purification as He makes us holy:

1 Corinthians 1:30:

30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

As soon as Moses’s son foreskin touched Moses’ feet, the Lord left him alone. This is because he had received spiritual purification-he had been forgiven for his sins:

2 Corinthians 5:21:

21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

And the irony is, for some people, it is in that lodging place that they meet Christ-when they are so close to the scent of death. For a lot of us this has happened. Others, have already received the call and are on their way when they stop at the lodging place, and are so close to death before receiving the cleansing of Christ once more, to be forgiven for our sins. Others are unfortunately met with death in that place.
This is how Moses nearly met death at the lodging place. This is how some have met death.
Walk past the lodging place-and walk towards purpose through the spiritual purification we have received in Christ. Walk in your spiritual inheritance to be able to move in the power we have received from Him by His Spirit:

Zechariah 4:6:

So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
